Mount Vernon Campus - Pathways to Sustainability Learning Community Presetations - Dec.3rd and Dec. 4th

The Pathways to Sustainability Learning Community presents:
How can we eat sustainably?
One of the important things I have learned this quarter in facilitating the “Pathways to Sustainability” Learning Community is that how you eat has double the impact on global warming as how much or what you drive. So, if you are interested in learning about ways that individuals and our Skagit Valley community can eat and grow food sustainably please come to our wrap-up poster session.

When: Thursday, 4-Dec & Friday, 5-Dec from 8:30 to 10:20
Where: Lewis 56
Some of the important questions that our students are addressing include:
• Is farmed salmon healthy for us and the environment?
• How is the apple industry supporting sustainability in WA state?
• How does a vegetarian diet compare with a meat-based diet in terms of CO2eq footprint?
• How can WA State sustainably address the issue of cow waste on farms?
• Why is the decline of the honey bee population important to food production in the U.S.?
• How can re-solarizing save Skagit County farms?
• What are the effects of factory-fed vs. grass-fed cows on our environment?
Our research groups will provide pamphlets/handouts for those interested in taking info home.

Mount Vernon Campus - Ethnic Studies 120 - Winter Quarter

Ethnic Studies 120 (5): Survey of the Chicana/o & Latina/o People (Winter 2009)
This is an evening class that will meet on Tues/Thurs from 7pm to 9:20pm. Most importantly, this course fulfills the Associate in Arts University College Transfer Degree: Culture Distribution List.

Course description: This course is a general introduction to the historiography, social, and economic status of transnational Chicanas/os and Latinas/os. We will revisit the conquest of Mesoamerica; the annexation of the Southwest by the U.S.; and the socially constructed politics of the early Chican@ Civil-Rights Movement. We will critically examine the unresolved conflicts of class, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, and transnationalism that still impact early and post Chican@- Latin@- Movement Generations. In the final analysis, we will attempt to answer: Can Chicanismo—the ideology of being Chicana/o—be positioned as a critical transnational activism rhetoric such as Zapatismo? Zapatismo as theorized and practiced by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), an Indigenous Anti-Neoliberal Globalization Movement Rhetoric, argues for: “a world where many worlds fit, and where those who govern do so by obeying.” In other words, a radical transformation of society and ourselves. Our readings and discussions will include the topics of Conquest, Displacement, Resistance, Gender Inequality, Heteronormativity, and Transnationalism.

Mount Vernon Campus - Deck the Halls & All That Jazz, SVC Choirs - December 5th

On behalf of the SVC Music Dept. and the Arts & Communication Division, I would like to invite you to Deck the Halls & All That Jazz, a celebration of the holiday season through music at McIntyre Hall on Friday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. This end-of-the-quarter concert brings together the SVC Choirs, the SVC Jazz Ensemble, and guest performers, the Solid Brass Quintet. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.

This concert is part of our FILL-THE-HOUSE CAMPAIGN, designed to help the SVC Choirs raise funds to travel to Austria this summer to sing in a Haydn festival. Filling the seats means less need for other forms of fundraising. Besides, it’s more fun than a raffle because everyone is guaranteed to leave a winner—because if you aren’t feeling festive walking in, you will by the end of the evening!

Please join SVC Music students and others as they deck McIntyre Hall with their musical flair. And bring along friends and family too. The holidays are all about community.
