As part of the Social Sciences Spring Symposium, entitled Social Justice: Problems and Solutions, my Human Sexuality class is doing Expert Panels. For the next two weeks. You and your classes are welcome to attend.
The last two weeks of Human Sexuality will be presentations by Expert Panels of students on various topics. These are not group presentations. Students become experts on their topics over the quarter, then, for one class hour, they give a statement about their topic and answer questions from me, the class, and visitors. Below is the schedule. The class is at 9:30 in A-125. Please join us for some interesting discussions.
The following discussions will be offered in June:
If You Could Live Anywhere, Anytime... The group picks a time in history to live for at least 10 years and explains why. What would life be like? Would class, race, gender, age make a difference in how they would experience that time/place? Tuesday, June 1
Violence Against Women There is a war against women in our country. Three women are killed every day in this country by their husbands or boyfriends. One in every four women will be raped while they are in college. One in four women will be the victims of spousal abuse. Wednesday, June 2
Sex Trafficking and Prostitution Tens of thousands of women and children are sold or kidnapped into sex slavery every year. Why does this continue to happen and what could be done to stop it? Thursday, June 3
Sex and the Law "Every human society attempts to control sexual behavior, since sex represents a rich source of conflicts that can disrupt orderly social processes. Human sexuality is too powerful and explosive a force for any society to allow its members complete sexual freedom. Some limits must be imposed, some rules agreed upon, and some enforcement mechanisms devised to implement the observance of the rules." What sexual behaviors should be regulated and why?
