District Wide - Budget Cut Forums - Jan. 18


Please try to attend one of the budget forums listed below. It is important for you, as a student, to know about how the Washington State budget situation will affect you AND it is important for you to be able to speak with other students about the situation as government representatives.

Budget forums for employees are scheduled for Tuesday, January 18:

12:30 p.m. – Whidbey Island Campus, Oak Hall 306.

3:00 p.m. – Mount Vernon Campus, Lewis Hall 65 — also available via interactive television at Whidbey, Oak Hall 204 [Studio A].

A budget forum for students is scheduled for Wednesday, January 19:

2:30 p.m. – Mount Vernon Campus, Angst 129 — also available via interactive television at Whidbey, Oak Hall 204 [Studio A].

Mount Vernon Campus - 9th Annual Martin Luther King Celebration - Jan. 15


Join People For a Peaceable Planet, Developing Unity Through Diversity and other local co-sponsors, for the 9th Annual Martin Luther King Celebration!

This great event will be held at the Phillip Tarro Auditorium at Skagit Valley College from 1 to 5 p.m. Suggested donation: $5 students, $10 general.

The following programs will be offered throughout the day:

Living Voices: Living Voices delivers a unique combination of theater, video, and live interaction that creates a high impact experience and an unforgettable journey through history.

Thomas Linzey: As founder of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, Thomas Linzey has advised communities throughout the United States on how to assert their right to local self-government and the rights of nature. Most recently, he was the legal advisor to the City of Pittsburgh as it combated the practice of natural gas fracking, which spreads natural gas and fracking chemicals into the ground water. The resulting ordinance bans fracking, denies legal personhood to corporations seeking to engage in fracking, and acknowledges the rights of nature.

Elizabeth Walker: A sustainability strategist and change agent, Elizabeth Walker offers a wide variety of services such as group facilitation, community engagement, sustainability plan development and introductions to the internationally acclaimed Natural Step community visioning method.

Ernest Tutt: A professor of communications at Skagit Valley College, Mr. Tutt is noted for his stunning and dramatic portrayals of black orators such as Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
