The Rules

Sign up on April 4, 2011 in the lobby from 11:30-2:30. We will email your target to you the following day. If you have any questions, concerns, or anything else contact Kristen in the Student leadership office, or email: Kristen.branson@Skagit.edu.

The game is to be played ON campus. Chasing your target down in the grocery store (for example) is unacceptable. Class times, as well as on campus jobs, are off limits for approaching your target. Inside the library, book store, the financial aid office (this applies to people in line as well), the counseling center, and any other office are also off limits. In line at the cafeteria or in the student center, waiting for classes to begin, etc are fair game. Hiding in a classroom that is not in session is not viable, you are still fair game. Be aware of class times and your surroundings- while ducking into a vacant classroom is great, running through a class in session is absolutely not allowed. This is still a college campus, though we try to make the experience as fun as possible, not everyone will be playing.

While on campus, during ‘game time’ ducks must be visible. This means if you take your duck off for work, or class, it should be put back on immediately afterwards. You may choose how and where on your person to display the duck.

It is up to you to seek out your target. Use contacts on campus, facebook, etc to find out who your target is. The target you have will also have a target, the object of your target’s hunt will now be your target. Take all ducks your target has and continue on.

Keep watch for people asking questions about you, new friends on facebook, etc. You may evade the person, but cannot hide your duck or disrupt any campus activities- ie classes- during the evasion. You may run, however, if the person hunting you asks you by your name for your duck consider yourself captured and relinquish the duck peacefully.

The game is intended to be friendly. Violence of any kind is prohibited, and our campus rules apply absolutely. You may continue ‘hunting’ your target, this means that you will now be in a race against the person hunting you to locate your target.

You MUST email in to studentlife@skagit.edu when you have captured your target. On Cardinal Day we will have a jousting ring available for final battles, if there is a tie for most ducks obtained the tie breaker will take place here. It is imperative that captures are reported to reduce cheating. If you do not report your captures you will be disqualified.

The use of ‘decoy ducks’ is unacceptable. We have a list of players and their ducks. Please do not replace your duck, if something happens that requires a replacement please contact Kristen or student life to explain and request a new duck.

The game will end Thursday June 1, 2011, with the final battles, winners, and prizes on Cardinal Day- June 3.

The Student Nurse Club's is supporting a Medical Mission team that will deliver supplies to Nicaragua and provide medical aid to local communities in need. Boxes where supplies can be donated are located in Angst Hall and in the Student Center. Start Spring Quarter off by supporting volunteers who are giving back to help others live a healthy life. Mount Vernon Campus - Rescheduled GlobalFest Concert - March 29

Skagit Valley College’s GlobalFest 2011 announces that its free benefit concert, originally scheduled for last month and canceled due to snow, has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. at McIntyre Hall, which is located at SVC’s Mount Vernon Campus.

The concert will feature The Slough Dogs, an eclectic blend of rock/rhythm/blues/folk, with an opening performance by Native American flutist Peter Ali, and special guest Swil Kanim. All voluntary donations at the event will help support SVC student scholarships for study abroad.

Kirk Larson, Western Washington Public Affairs Specialist for the Social Security Administration, will reveal all you need to know about Social Security.

Larson will talk about retirement benefits and eligibility, early retirement and how it effects your benefits, and more.

Larson has worked with the agency for over 18 years in both technical and managerial roles. Kirk has presented Social Security information in both the Seattle and San Francisco Regions. He has had several articles published, and has appeared on TV and Radio shows to discuss various Social Security issues. The Social Security Administration and other Federal Government organizations have recognized him for his outstanding public service. Kirk has a degree in Business Administration from California Polytechnic University at Pomona.

Thomas Linzey: As founder of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, Thomas Linzey has advised communities throughout the United States on how to assert their right to local self-government and the rights of nature. Most recently, he was the legal advisor to the City of Pittsburgh as it combated the practice of natural gas fracking, which spreads natural gas and fracking chemicals into the ground water. The resulting ordinance bans fracking, denies legal personhood to corporations seeking to engage in fracking, and acknowledges the rights of nature.

Elizabeth Walker: A sustainability strategist and change agent, Elizabeth Walker offers a wide variety of services such as group facilitation, community engagement, sustainability plan development and introductions to the internationally acclaimed Natural Step community visioning method.

Ernest Tutt: A professor of communications at Skagit Valley College, Mr. Tutt is noted for his stunning and dramatic portrayals of black orators such as Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.

Learning Into Action is a general education requirement for Skagit Valley College's transfer degrees on the Mount Vernon, Whidbey Island and San Juan Campuses. Learning Into Action is designed to help students think analytically about knowledge and skills gained in the college classroom and develop an independent project in which to apply that knowledge and skill. The project may relate to career exploration, development or continuing education. The student, the Faculty Sponsor, the Learning Into Action Coordinator and the Site Supervisor work together in supporting student learning objectives related to a specific placement or project.

Campus LIA Info Sessions will be in room C-48. Get answers to questions not answered by the ONLINE ORIENTATION and our campus WEBSITE, which you should read prior to the onground session. About Yoram Bauman, PhD

Appearing in venues ranging from the New York Improv to the annual meeting of the American Economic Association, Yoram Bauman has become successfully known as "the first, and only, stand-up economist."

With a B.A. in Mathematics from Reed College and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington, Bauman seeks to "spread joy" through economics comedy, reform economics education and implement carbon pricing.

When he isn't researching the economics of climate change or teaching in the University of Washington's environmental studies program, Bauman regularly performs at clubs and corporate events around the country.

The last two weeks of Human Sexuality will be presentations by Expert Panels of students on various topics. These are not group presentations. Students become experts on their topics over the quarter, then, for one class hour, they give a statement about their topic and answer questions from me, the class, and visitors. Sex Trafficking and Prostitution Tens of thousands of women and children are sold or kidnapped into sex slavery every year. Why does this continue to happen and what could be done to stop it? Thursday, June 3

Sex and the Law "Every human society attempts to control sexual behavior, since sex represents a rich source of conflicts that can disrupt orderly social processes. Human sexuality is too powerful and explosive a force for any society to allow its members complete sexual freedom. Skagit Valley College’s GlobalFest 2010 will conclude with a free Benefit Concert for Haiti on Thursday, March 4, 2010, 7 p.m., at McIntyre Hall.

The free concert will feature some of the top musical talent and regional favorites of Skagit Valley College and the surrounding communities.

Among the artists donating their time and talent to help the relief and recovery effort in Haiti are: Juba Marimba, The South Side North Fork Band, Maggie’s Fury, Prozac Mountain Boys, Ancient Sounds of the Didgeridoo with Dr. Ernest Tutt, and the solo guitar of Moroccan student Mehdi Makraz.

A cash bar serving beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks will be available.

All voluntary donations at the event will go to the American Red Cross to support their relief and recovery efforts in Haiti.

The 7th Annual Skagit Human Rights Festival (SHRF) expands with a mix of speakers, discussions, and films at two locations this March.

The focus of this year’s Human Rights Festival is on the role that the media plays in driving our perceptions of world events. The Skagit Valley College radio station, KSVR 91.7 fm, will record the events and feature human rights programming throughout February and March.

As global citizens, it is imperative to recognize that genocide continues to occur in the twenty-first century. This presentation explores the ways the 2003 genocide in Darfur matters in a globalized world and how we, as citizens, can respond to shape political will and impact public policy.

This evening will focus on peacemaking efforts around the world and here at home, featuring a short documentary on Building a Nonviolent Peaceforce and the 2009 documentary Rethink Afghanistan, from director Robert Greenwald. There will be a small panel of peacemakers and veterans on hand and a short question and answer series after the films.

Health as a Societal Right: Is Capitalism Killing Us? with Stephen Bezruchka MD
Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, ER physician and professor of Population Health Studies at the University of Washington, describes how and why social and economic inequity negatively impacts the health of people in that society. Reducing the gap between the rich and the poor, and prioritizing care in early childhood would improve our overall health."

Skagit Valley College is pleased to announce that Rick Steves, author and travel expert, will kick off SVC's GlobalFest 2010 on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. in McIntyre Hall, which is located at SVC's Mount Vernon Campus. Admission is free to Rick Steves' presentation, "Travel As A Political Act," however tickets are required.

Festival Seating: Free with ticket.

The author of over 30 European travel guidebooks and host of a national public television series, Rick feels that travel helps us "challenge truths we were raised to think were selfevident and God-given." Rick shares how the other 96 percent of humanity sees our nation naturally out of his travel experiences.

Beginning a month long celebration, Skagit Valley College's GlobalFest 2010 opens with an International Dinner, on Tuesday, February 9. A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. International Dinner tickets include priority seating for Rick Steves' presentation - "Travel as a Political Act".

Mount Vernon Campus - Jazz & Blues Alley with the Annie Reed Quintet - Feb. 9

The Annie Reed Quintet is performing in the Cafeteria. Annie Reed is a SVC Medical Assisting student who also works as a student event programmer for Skagit Valley College. Come and enjoy the music while you eat on Tuesday, February 9.

Annie, a contralto vocalist, lyric writer and performer, sings vocal jazz/blues, R & B, swing and be-bop scats as well as original melodies. She carries a four-octave range with an unending lushness in quality, singing notes and phrases that leave you on the edge of your seat.

Originally from Edmonds, Annie studied piano and voice at a very young age. She began singing at the age of two in the church and has continued for 34 years.

Annie has worked with many artists, including Ernestine Anderson, Matt Catingub, Don Shelton, Paul Tillotson (Gene Harris' protegé), Mark Miller, Cathy Feller and Lee Halderson. She is also a member of the Seattle Jazz Singers.

Mount Vernon Campus - Where God Used to Be Art Exhibition - Feb. 4 to Feb. 26

There will be a new art exhibition entitled Where God Used to Be which will be held at the Campus Center Gallery from Thursday, February 4 to Friday, February 26.

Displayed at the Gallery will be inspired work from Fred Holcomb, Natalie Niblack and Pamela Mills.

Art displayed will be acrylic on canvas, graphite on paper and oil on wood, and other media.

There will also be an artists' talk on Friday, February 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

Afterwards, an artists' reception will be held at the Campus Center Gallery from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Paul Cienfuegos is the co-founding director of Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County based in Arcata, CA, and is the co-author of “Measure F: The Arcata Advisory Initiative on Democracy and Corporations.” He gives lectures and workshops on corporations and democracy, and was a featured speaker at this year's Village Building Convergence in Portland. With a Ph. D. in nuclear physics, John Rawlins has taught college physics, most recently at Whatcom Community College, and spent nearly 20 years working in the nuclear power facilities at Hanford. Since 2004, he has made an intensive study of the world's terminal consumption not just of petroleum (peak oil), but also of other conventional energy sources (coal, natural gas, uranium), and how that will affect the world's industrial and food systems, both of which are dependent on cheap, abundant energy.

Joel Magnuson, Ph.D. is an economist based in Portland, Oregon and specializes in non-orthodox approaches to political economy. He is an active member of an international research group based in Europe that is working toward new philosophical foundations for economic theory and practice. He is a visiting fellow at the Ashcroft International Business School at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, England and advisor to the editorial board of Anglia's journal, Interconnections. Magnuson is most known for his book, Mindful Economics: How The U.S. Economy Works, Why It Matters, and How It Could Be Different, published by Seven Stories Press, New York, 2008.
