REVITALIZING COMMUNITY
Thursday, Feb 26
5:30 pm Green Drinks
Regular Art Bar Prices
7:00 pm Presentation & Panel Discussion
$10 Suggested Donation
From its beginning in Leeds, England as an informal happy hour for the environmental community, Green Drinks (greendrinks.org) has grown to include 454 communities worldwide. People meet monthly for agenda-free enjoyment of ideas and connections between like-minded and curious “greensters.” Green Drinks is a great way to get a regular check in with the mover and shakers in the community
Skagit’s inaugural Green Drinks at the Lincoln Theatre will kick off an evening of innovative community solutions to the puzzles of preservation and development.
Following presentations of the City of Mount Vernon’s waterfront development plan and the Main Street downtown revitalization program, we’ll convene a panel of representative community models to generate creative solutions.
Panel speakers:
Paul McLeod (Transition Towns, Sustainable Bellingham)
Chris Moore (Washington Preservation Trust)
Kimberly Neagle (Main Street Mount Vernon)
Jana Hansen (City of Mount Vernon)

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Thursday, March 5
7:00 pm
$10 Suggested Donation
The documentary “Kilowatt Ours” focuses on how ordinary citizens can take an active role in energy conservation and provides simple solutions for homes, businesses and schools that significantly lower utility bills. This 56 minute film examines where our energy comes from before it reaches our outlets and switches, revealing the hidden costs.
Few of us consider the health and environmental consequences of power generation, given our isolation from the source of its production. Nationally, fifty percent of our electricity comes from the burning of coal, and another twenty percent from nuclear sources. (The film does not address Washington State particularly, but our local utility Puget Sound Energy reported in 2007 over 37% of our power was generated from coal, predominantly from sources partially-owned by PSE in Montana). After examining the harmful effects from mining, transportation and disposal of waste associated with both coal and nuclear power, the film turns to practical, affordable and relevant steps for change that all of us can readily adopt into our daily lives.
Conservation and renewable energy are highlighted as a viable alternative to our current energy path, and will be the focus for a panel discussion following the film. Local experts in energy efficiency and renewable energy producers and installers will share knowledge and respond to questions.

WATER
Thursday, March 12
7:00 pm
$10 suggested donation
Who owns access to clean drinking water? The answer to that question is critical. We assume that clean drinking water is a common right, yet more than a billion people in the world today live without it. We here in the water rich Skagit Valley will face that question as well.
The movie “Flow – For Love Of Water,” center-piece for this evening’s event, addresses the issue – and seeks to provide some hope for the future – without ignoring the magnitude of the problem.
A panel will use the movie as a stepping stone for a discussion of the situation in our valley and our state.

Something remarkable is happening in the fields and orchards of the Pacific Northwest: small family farmers are making a comeback. They’re growing much healthier food, and much more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms. “Good Food,” a Whidbey Island-made documentary, visits producers, farmers’ markets, distributors and public officials who are developing a more sustainable food system.
A panel discussion follows the film including representatives from Blue Heron Farm, Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, and Washington State Food & Farming Network.
Before the screening, join filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op for a reception and discussion of Equitable Farming and Triple Bottom Line Agriculture from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. RSVP at: www.skagitfoodcoop.com.

District Wide - EXPERIENCE CHINA Information Sessions - Feb. 10
Join us in August 2009 as we journey to China on the adventure of a lifetime!
Visit China's capital, Beijing, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, staying in student dorms on the campus of Beijing Foreign Studies University. Hear lectures from prominent professors about Chinese life and culture, and interact in casual settings with Chinese students and faculty.
Travel to the ancient capital of Xi'an, home of the Terracotta Warriors, one of the archaeological wonders of the world.
Visit "the real China" in Sichuan province - live and work among local rural villagers as we pitch in to help them rebuild from the devastating earthquakes of last May.
College credit may be available.
This study tour is sponsored by Skagit Valley College and led by faculty member Ted Maloney, SVC's exchange professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2005-07. This tour is open to SVC students, faculty, staff and community members.
This tour is not suitable for everyone. For a significant portion of the trip we will be living in rugged rural areas (with minimal facilities) seldom visited by foreigners, and at the invitation of an aid organization that depends on maintaining local good will to continue its important work. As a result, space is limited, and no guarantee that all applicants will be selected.
COST: $2800, including round trip air fare, domestic travel in China, admission fees and guides, accommodations and ground transportation, and some meals. Participants should plan for an additional $100-200 as spending money for some meals, personal items and souvenirs.
DATES: August 16-31, 2009
Information Sessions.
To learn more about this exciting opportunity, there will be two information sessions: on Tuesday, February 10, at the Mount Vernon campus, 12:30-1:30 pm in N-119, and at the Whidbey Island campus on Tuesday, February 10, 2:30-3:30 pm, in Hayes 137. It is strongly recommended that you attend one of these sessions if you are thinking of applying to go on this trip. However, if you cannot attend and would like an informational packet and an application, contact Ted Maloney, 360-416-7774, ted.maloney@skagit.edu.
Whidbey Island Campus - "52 Card Pick-Up" Theatre Production - Feb. 6
Is love in the cards?
"52 Card Pick-Up", a professional theatre production coming this Friday to Whidbey.
52 cards in a deck. 52 scenes about a couple’s relationship. The title of each scene is written on a card. At the start of the show the deck is shuffled and tossed in the air. The actors pick up the cards one at a time, which determines the playing order of the scenes.
The story: Very simple. They meet, they fall in love, they fall out of love, they break up. But with this concept you might see them break up before they meet. You might see ’The First Kiss’ following a fight. Or a bed scene before their second date. Or apologies for arguments that haven’t happened yet! This production has received rave reviews and won awards at theatre competitions. And it's never the same show twice.
Special SVC student price $5 in advance. Public in advance $10. Everyone at door $12. Adult Content – 16 years and up please. Sponsored by Whidbey Island Campus Program Board. Tickets on sale now at the SVC Whidbey cashier's window for this funny and unique theatre performance. Call 679-5353 to buy your tickets and we can have them waiting for you at the door.
Don't miss this professional Seattle's theatre group’s HIT SHOW on Friday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Hayes Hall 137.
When was the last time you crossed the bridge? Enjoy an evening out on the island.
