District Wide - EXPERIENCE CHINA Information Sessions - Feb. 10

Join us in August 2009 as we journey to China on the adventure of a lifetime!

Visit China's capital, Beijing, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, staying in student dorms on the campus of Beijing Foreign Studies University. Hear lectures from prominent professors about Chinese life and culture, and interact in casual settings with Chinese students and faculty.

Travel to the ancient capital of Xi'an, home of the Terracotta Warriors, one of the archaeological wonders of the world.

Visit "the real China" in Sichuan province - live and work among local rural villagers as we pitch in to help them rebuild from the devastating earthquakes of last May.

College credit may be available.

This study tour is sponsored by Skagit Valley College and led by faculty member Ted Maloney, SVC's exchange professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2005-07. This tour is open to SVC students, faculty, staff and community members.

This tour is not suitable for everyone. For a significant portion of the trip we will be living in rugged rural areas (with minimal facilities) seldom visited by foreigners, and at the invitation of an aid organization that depends on maintaining local good will to continue its important work. As a result, space is limited, and no guarantee that all applicants will be selected.

COST: $2800, including round trip air fare, domestic travel in China, admission fees and guides, accommodations and ground transportation, and some meals. Participants should plan for an additional $100-200 as spending money for some meals, personal items and souvenirs.

DATES: August 16-31, 2009

To learn more about this exciting opportunity, there will be two information sessions: on Tuesday, February 10, at the Mount Vernon campus, 12:30-1:30 pm in N-119, and at the Whidbey Island campus on Tuesday, February 10, 2:30-3:30 pm, in Hayes 137. It is strongly recommended that you attend one of these sessions if you are thinking of applying to go on this trip. Whidbey Island Campus - "52 Card Pick-Up" Theatre Production - Feb. 6

Is love in the cards?

"52 Card Pick-Up", a professional theatre production coming this Friday to Whidbey.

52 cards in a deck. 52 scenes about a couple’s relationship. The title of each scene is written on a card. At the start of the show the deck is shuffled and tossed in the air. The actors pick up the cards one at a time, which determines the playing order of the scenes.

The story: Very simple. They meet, they fall in love, they fall out of love, they break up. But with this concept you might see them break up before they meet. You might see ’The First Kiss’ following a fight. Or a bed scene before their second date. Or apologies for arguments that haven’t happened yet! This production has received rave reviews and won awards at theatre competitions. And it's never the same show twice.

Mount Vernon - Mongolia Library Project Presentation - Feb 10

As many of you may or may not know the Upsilon Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa here on the Mount Vernon Campus conducts periodic book drives. Many thanks to those of you who have helped us in these past efforts. These collection drives both raised funds and aided projects in Africa.

Now the club is taking on an additional project in connection with our book drives.

Donna Rushing will present information concerning the Mongolia Library Project, Tuesday, February 10th at 12:30-1:30 p.m. This will be held in the Mt. Vernon campus library in the meeting room in the far right corner in the back of the Library. Because it is in the Library, no food or drink is allowed.
