Mount Vernon Campus - Movie Night: The Great Debators - Feb. 10

Come see The Great Debaters, the touching drama based on the true story of a professor at Wiley College who inspired his students to form the school's first debate team. Be inspired as you watch the Wiley College debate team go up against Harvard.

This FREE movie will be shown at the Czarna Collins room at the Library at at 6 to 9 p.m on Wednesday, February 10.

Mount Vernon Campus - Global Fest: Rick Steves - Feb. 9

Skagit Valley College is pleased to announce that Rick Steves, author and travel expert, will kick off SVC's GlobalFest 2010 on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. in McIntyre Hall, which is located at SVC's Mount Vernon Campus. Admission is free to Rick Steves' presentation, "Travel As A Political Act," however tickets are required.

Festival Seating: Free with ticket.

The author of over 30 European travel guidebooks and host of a national public television series, Rick feels that travel helps us "challenge truths we were raised to think were selfevident and God-given." Rick shares how the other 96 percent of humanity sees our nation naturally out of his travel experiences.

Rick Steves' Travel as a Political Act ($16.95) and DVD Iran ($19.95) can be purchased for a limited time at the Cardinal Bookstore, both in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor. Rick will be available to sign copies of his book following the event.

Beginning a month long celebration, Skagit Valley College's GlobalFest 2010 opens with an International Dinner, on Tuesday, February 9. A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. International Dinner tickets include priority seating for Rick Steves' presentation - "Travel as a Political Act".

Mount Vernon Campus - Jazz & Blues Alley with the Annie Reed Quintet - Feb. 9

The Annie Reed Quintet is performing in the Cafeteria. Annie Reed is a SVC Medical Assisting student who also works as a student event programmer for Skagit Valley College. Come and enjoy the music while you eat on Tuesday, February 9.

Annie, a contralto vocalist, lyric writer and performer, sings vocal jazz/blues, R & B, swing and be-bop scats as well as original melodies. She carries a four-octave range with an unending lushness in quality, singing notes and phrases that leave you on the edge of your seat.

Originally from Edmonds, Annie studied piano and voice at a very young age. She began singing at the age of two in the church and has continued for 34 years.

Annie has worked with many artists, including Ernestine Anderson, Matt Catingub, Don Shelton, Paul Tillotson (Gene Harris' protegé), Mark Miller, Cathy Feller and Lee Halderson. She is also a member of the Seattle Jazz Singers.

Mount Vernon Campus - Where God Used to Be Art Exhibition - Feb. 4 to Feb. 26

There will be a new art exhibition entitled Where God Used to Be which will be held at the Campus Center Gallery from Thursday, February 4 to Friday, February 26.

Displayed at the Gallery will be inspired work from Fred Holcomb, Natalie Niblack and Pamela Mills.

Art displayed will be acrylic on canvas, graphite on paper and oil on wood, and other media.

There will also be an artists' talk on Friday, February 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

Afterwards, an artists' reception will be held at the Campus Center Gallery from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
